Calais and Brussels: travelling with Charles Hope-Weir
Sailing from Dover, Adam landed at Calais and in Brussels joined Charles Hope-Weir, brother of the Earl of Hopetoun, who took him along at the suggestion of his uncle, the Marquess of Annandale; via Tournai and Lille, with Vauban's citadel, they reached Paris by 12 November. In Rome the companions fell out over travelling expenses and accommodation.

Rome: Piranesi, Cardinal Albani, Winckelmann
On the way to Italy Adam saw the Pont du Gard, the Maison Carrée and other ancient ruins of southern France; in Rome, with Clérisseau and the painter Antonio Zucchi, he immersed himself in antiquities, grew close to Piranesi and the collector Cardinal Alessandro Albani, and came to know the work of Winckelmann. Other accounts have him in Rome until 1757.
