In the summer of 1883 Serov travelled through the Crimea and the Caucasus with his friend Vladimir Derviz.

Leaves the Academy and moves in with the Mamontovs
In September 1886 Serov finally decided to leave the Academy and took his papers; because of the question of military service he moved to Moscow to the Mamontovs. He later wrote that at the Academy he valued only Chistyakov’s opinion.
