Pen and ink caricature showing a group of Victorian actor/managers dressed in gym kit, racing past a signpost labelled 'To America'. The actor/manager Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905), wearing his distinctive pince nez, is in the lead and has the number one pinned to his chest. Signed 'H.M.', undated.
The drawing, which was probably made for one of the illustrated periodicals, is commenting on the fact that many late 19th century British actor/managers were taking their theatrical companies on tours of America in a bid to generate funds and publicity. Sir Henry Irving was amongst the first to do so, and his Lyceum Company made their first tour of America in 1883.
