About the painting

This is from a series of paintings collectively known as ragamala or ‘garland of ragas’ – visual representations of musical modes and poetic verses. The joys and sorrows of love

are the central theme of a ragamala series

with the raga and ragini as male and female characters. Here a lady plays her vina and yearns for her lover, and the mood is one of melancholy.
