A Ming loyalist who refused to serve the Qing after the dynasty’s fall, Jin Junming found moral expression in the combination of painting, poetry, and calligraphy. Here, he depicts the resilient plum blossom and upright bamboo, symbols of purity, perseverance, and integrity. The inscription reads, “Though I have not met Chisongzi, I may yet dwell beside the Lord of Solitary Bamboo.” Chisongzi, a legendary Daoist immortal, represents transcendence beyond the worldly realm, while the “Lord of Solitary Bamboo” personifies the virtuous gentleman. Unable to withdraw completely from the world like an immortal, Jin instead aligns himself with the steadfast ideals embodied by plum and bamboo.
