Congress of Aachen: The Attention of Alexander I
In 1818, at the Congress of Aachen, Dawe first painted Prince Pyotr Volkonsky; seeing the artist at work, Alexander I was struck by the likeness and ordered that Dawe be invited to come to Russia to paint portraits of Russian generals.

Alexander I's Commission and Move to St. Petersburg
Alexander I commissioned Dawe to paint portraits of the senior Russian commanders who had fought against Napoleon; in 1819 the artist moved to St. Petersburg.

European Journey with the Duke of Kent
In 1819 Dawe, who enjoyed the patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, set off with the Duke on a journey through Europe, in the course of which he attracted the attention of the Russian Emperor Alexander I.

Portraits for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace
From 1822 to 1828 Dawe, with his assistants Alexander Polyakov and Wilhelm Golike, painted more than 300 portraits for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace, becoming a celebrity throughout Europe.
