May one see it?
London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
This is a marble bust made in about 1500-1550 in Lombardy, Italy. This bust is fully in the round and represents a bearded male figure, an Emperor, wearing a laurel wreath. The curve of the lower edge suggests that the bust was set in a circular opening, like those on the facade of the Colleoni Chapel at Bergamo. An analogy for the treatment of the hair and for the cutting of the eyes sockets and mouth occurs in the St. John the Baptist by Bambaia on the Birago Monument at Isola Bella.
