About the sculpture

This bust shows the Greek poet Sappho. She lived on the Greek island of Lesbos and is known for her lyric poetry.

Plaster busts like this were used to take moulds to cast black basalt busts. The plaster busts were often provided to Wedgwood by Hoskins and Grant in London.
