London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
Thomas Hearne began his career as a draughtsman in 1771. From 1794 he stopped exhibiting at the RA, frustrated that watercolours were displayed in dim spaces away from the main ‘Great Room’. He refused to exhibit for 13 years. But in 1806 he showed Caister Castle, possibly spurred by the success of the first exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours, held the previous year.
