French occupation and the Madrid uprising
Spain was occupied by the French and an uprising broke out in Madrid; Goya remained in Madrid throughout the war, which affected him deeply.

Portraits of the actress Antonia Zárate
He painted his friend, the actress Antonia Zárate, twice — in 1810 and 1811, shortly before her death from tuberculosis; one of the portraits is now in the Hermitage.

The etching series "The Disasters of War"
Shaken by the chaos of war, he created a cycle of 82 etchings imbued with hatred of war's horrors; they were published only in 1863, 35 years after his death.

Death of his wife Josefa
Goya was widowed: his wife Josefa Bayeu died. The subsequent division of property with his son Javier became the principal source of information about the artist's daily life.
