Beginning of His Relationship with Hendrickje Stoffels
In early 1649 Rembrandt grew close to the 23-year-old Hendrickje Stoffels, who had previously served as his maid. Her image appears in many works of his late period.

The painting was executed in 1653 on commission from the Sicilian nobleman Antonio Ruffo; it is a characteristic example of the clarity and monumentality of his large-figure compositions of the 1650s.
