For the stadtholder Rembrandt created the paired paintings The Raising of the Cross (1633) and The Descent from the Cross (1632/1633), inspired by engravings after Rubens's triptychs for the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp.

Marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh
Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh, cousin of the art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh; the wedding took place in the church of Sint Annaparochie without the artist's relatives. The marriage opened his access to commissions from prosperous burghers.

Rembrandt painted this large canvas with a nude figure, unusual for the Dutch school, in 1636; in the mid-1640s he substantially altered the central part of the picture. For a long time the canvas remained in his house.
