Henry Irving (1838-1905) and John Lawrence Toole (1830-1906) were leading theatre actor-managers in the 19th century and close friends throughout their long careers. Squire Bancroft, a fellow actor-manager of the 19th century, called their friendship 'extremes meet; they always do and always will', as Irving was better-known for excelling at tragedy roles, and Toole renowned for his comedic roles.
Both men had emerged from humble beginnings: Irving from a working-class family in Somerset, and Toole the son of a messenger for the East India Company. At the time of this caricature in 1900, both men were established elder statesmen of the theatre and this depiction reflects their status as successful gentlemen.
