About the work

This pencil sketch of Henry Irving by the artist A.M.Freeman formed part of a set of sketches of the actor collected in a scrapbook.

The role which this image shows is not confirmed, but might be that of Sidney Carton in A Tales of Two Cities which had been adapted for the stage by Tom Taylor (in consultation with Charles Dickens) in 1860.
