May one see it?
London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
Pen and ink illustration created for publication in an illustrated newspaper or magazine, probably The Sketch. It shows the actress Ellen Terry (1847-1928) as Madame Sans Gêne and the Actor/Manager Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) as Napoleon in 'Madame Sans-Gene'. The play was adapted by J Comyns Carr (from the French play of the same name by Victorien Sardou & Eduard Moreau) and first produced at the Lyceum Theatre, London on the 10th April 1897.
A series of figures are positioned above the large central image of Terry and Irving, they are shown glaring down at the actors. Above them is the caption 'Vaudeville Theatre, Paris' which is the venue where Victorien Sardou (1831 – 1908) Sardou's play was originally produced in 1893.
The illustration was drawn by the artist Alfred Bryan (1852–1899) in 1897 and has been signed by the artist with his initials in the bottom left hand corner.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
