Coronation Portrait of Catherine II
He was invited to Moscow to paint the coronation portrait of Catherine II. The "almost heraldic in its refinement" profile so flattered the empress that she ordered that her face henceforth be depicted after Rokotov's originals.

Title of Academician
He was awarded the title of academician "for demonstrated skill in the art of portrait painting" and for a copy of Luca Giordano's "Venus and Cupid." Stählin saw as many as 50 unfinished portraits at once in his apartment.
