This pen and ink illustration was created for publication in a contemporary llustrated magazine, probably The Penny Illustrated Paper. It shows various scenes from the original production of 'In Town' that opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre on the16th October 1892. The actors depicted are Sylvia Grey [1866-1958] as Flo Fanshawe, Phyllis Broughton [1862-1926] as Lord Clanside, Arthur Roberts [1852-1933] as Captain Arthur Coddington, and Flora St. John [1855-1912] as Kitty Hetherton, with the author Adrian Ross [1859-1933] depicted top right.
In Town transferred to The Gaiety Theatre on 29th December 1892 and ran for 229 performances, initiating the very successful series of modern-dress musicals mounted by George Edwardes and James T. Tanner including A Gaiety Girl, Prince of Wales Theatre 1893, The Shop Girl, Gaiety Theatre 1894, An Artist’s Model, and A Modern Trilby, Daly’s Theatre 1895. The first American production of In Town opened on Broadway at the Knickerbocker Theatre, 6th September 1897, starring W. Louis Bradfield as Arthur Coddington and Marie Studholme as Kitty.
