In 2016 Ai co-signed a letter calling on the British and Swedish governments to guarantee Assange’s freedom of movement; he later visited him in Belmarsh prison, and in September 2019 held a silent protest outside the Old Bailey, where Assange’s extradition hearing was taking place.

Firstsite rejects his piece about Assange
For the virtual British “Great Big Art Exhibition” Ai proposed “Postcard for Political Prisoners”, incorporating a photograph of the running machine Assange used in the Ecuadorian embassy. The director of the organiser, Firstsite, declined to include it, citing time constraints and its fit with the exhibition’s concept; Ai thought the real reason was an unwillingness to touch the subject of Assange.
