This image depicts city life before the introduction of systemised street lighting. A darkened back street conceals an impromptu party. The man holding a torch is probably a linkman, who would have been employed to provide a guiding torch light during the night.
The 18th-century painter John Collet specialised in humorous scenes of everyday people.
