This painting shows a Chinese state official (called 'mandarin' at that time) in his court dress, complete with hat and necklace. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Europeans thought that Chinese clothes and hairstyles were unfamiliar, and numerous paintings similar to this one were produced to demonstrate these trends.
