About the sculpture

At the time of its acquisition the relief was said to have come from Volterra. Fourteen panels of the same size and in the same style remain in Volterra and probably originated from the choir screen of the Cathedral although panels of this type were also used to decorate pulpits, baptismal fonts and altars.
