In 1999 Bourgeois received the Golden Lion at the 48th Venice Biennale.
2000
“Maman” in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern
Bourgeois’s works were chosen for the opening of Tate Modern in 2000, and in the Turbine Hall, as a commission for the Unilever Series, “Maman” first appeared: a spider over nine metres high in steel and marble, later cast in an edition of six bronzes.
