May one see it?
London, United Kingdom
The owner is known. Whether it is on view today, the museum does not say, and we were not trained to guess.
This figure is of gilt bronze and made by an unknown artist in Italy ca. 1600. It represents Atlas, who supports the celestial sphere. In Greek mythology Atlas is condemned by the good Zeus, for his part in the battle of the Titans, to stand at the western ends of the earth supporting the heavens on his shoulders.
