May one see it?
London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
This ivory statuette represents Summer (Ceres?) in the form of a draped female figure. She is carrying a sheaf of corn in the right arm, with the left arm extended and the right leg and breast exposed. On a black wood and ivory base. The statuette is perhaps German and made in about 1900. The figure is distantly reminiscent of eighteenth-century German sculpture in other materials, such as stone and wood, for example the work of Ferdinand Tietz (1708-1777). But it is more likely to be a later pastiche. The craquelure seems to have been artificially induced.
