About the sculpture

Alexander the Great is portrayed as a young man, with long, flowing hair and elaborate armour and helmet. For the attention to detail and the fine modelling, this bust recalls the bronze sculptures and medals by Leone Leoni (1509-1590). Another version of this bust exists in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

The bust is mounted on an 18th century French stand.
