This figure is one of a number made under Imperial command in the early 15th century and given as diplomatic gifts to leading Tibetan religious figures. During the reigns of Yongle and Xuande a number of Tibetan hierarchs were invited to the Chinese court to conduct religious ceremonies or to create diplomatic links and on these occasions presents of images or ritual objects would be given.
