The boy is a pendant to a bronze girl holding a torch in the Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf, and both may have originated from a tomb. They may also have formed part of a larger ensemble. Both are similar in size, manner of casting and the modelling of the quite fat limbs.
The dominant motif of the shell, might perhaps indicate that the statuettes belonged to a tomb of an admiral or other naval commander.
