Perov travelled to Nizhny Novgorod, the Volga and the Orenburg province and began making studies for the painting “The Trial of Pugachev”.

A chill while hunting and the onset of consumption
Perov caught a chill while hunting, and consumption began to develop; it first showed itself in 1874.

The third Peredvizhniki exhibition
The third exhibition of the Association showed “Plastuns at Sevastopol” and the study “Kirghiz Convict”; on the basis of Turgenev's novel “Fathers and Sons” Perov painted “Old Parents at Their Son's Grave”.

In 1877 Perov left the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions.

The World's Fair in Paris
In 1878 at the World's Fair in Paris Perov showed “The Wanderer”, “The Birdcatcher”, “The Fisherman”, “Fomushka the Owl” and “Hunters at Rest”, along with portraits of F. M. Dostoevsky and V. V. Bezsonov.
