About the sculpture

This statuette probably formed part of a table fountain with figures of the planets, which could on occasion have flowed with wine. Similar bronzes, probably by the Augsburg sculptor and goldsmith Joachim Forster (1500-79), were supplied to the Fuggers, the great Augsburg banking family. Like many works commissioned by the Fuggers, these bronzes are in a very Italianate style.
