Five Vermeers, One Room

Of the roughly 34 surviving paintings by Johannes Vermeer, five hang in a single gallery in New York. It is the densest concentration of Vermeer on Earth — and you can walk in today.

Vermeer's entire surviving output would fit in two modest rooms. That scarcity is part of the spell — and it makes the Metropolitan Museum's holding astonishing: five autograph Vermeers, all currently confirmed on view in Gallery 614.

The five entered the collection the American way: bought by Gilded Age fortunes — Marquand, Altman, Huntington, Friedsam — and left to the public. A sixth canvas in the Met's records, A Young Woman Reading, is catalogued honestly as 'Imitator of Vermeer': a twentieth-century pastiche once sold as the real thing.

Attribution is data too

ART WIKI keeps that distinction structural. Qualified attributions — 'imitator of', 'attributed to' — never merge into the artist's entity. Vermeer's page counts his works; the imitation sits apart, labeled as the museum labels it. A catalogue that can't say 'not by him' can't be trusted when it says 'by him.'

The sixth Vermeer question — The Concert, stolen from the Gardner in 1990 — is the subject of another Journal piece. Its state remains LOCATION UNKNOWN.
