This painted illustration was created for publication in a newspaper/illustrated magazine, probably the Penny Illustrated Paper. It shows the arrival of King Edward VII (1841-1910) and his wife Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) at Royal Entrance of the Royal Opera House, London on the opening night of an unidentified production at the Royal Opera House, London. Pencil annotation at the base of the illustration also identifies further honorable guests amongst the crowd assembled at this entrance, including the 'Earl de Grey' and 'Prince and Princess Charles of Denmark'.
The illustration is not dated but has been signed with the initials of the artist who created the illustration, Alexander Joseph Finberg.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
